Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has announced that it will not allow imports of food items with additional labels from next month.

MFDA said in an announcement on Thursday, January 12, that some food items are currently imported into Maldives in packages and containers used for other products. When imported in this manner, another label is attached in addition to the original label, the announcement said.

According to the announcement, affixing an additional label to food in addition to the original label will make it difficult to trace the product in case of confusion and problems. It also violates food labeling standards, the announcement said.

Therefore, food items imported in containers that are different from its original packaging or with an additional label will not be issued health clearance from February 15.

The use and import of food items violating food import standards have previously been prohibited in the past.
