Parliament on Wednesday passed the amendment to the Import Export Act in order to limit the duty taken from petrol and diesel to five percent.

The bill was lobbied on behalf of the government by the Parliamentary Group Leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Nihan and was passed unanimously by the 73 members present at the vote.

Lawmaker of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for Hithadhoo North constituency, Mohamed Aslam, proposed to cancel all duty from petrol and diesel. However, this amendment proposed by Galolhu North MP and member of MDP Eva Abdulla was ousted by the ruling coalition’s lawmakers with 42 votes against 30 members who voted in favor of the amendment.

The economic committee also passed the amendment without any further changes as proposed.

The amendment will come into effect once ratified by the president and published in national gazette.
