Friday sermons in the Maldives have begun being broadcast live on TV with English subtitles.
This is an initiative by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs aimed at serving the large number of foreign Muslim workers living in the country.
Initially, the Islamic Ministry considered delivering the Friday sermon in English at one mosque, seeking public opinion on the matter. However, the decision was made to continue delivering the sermon in Dhivehi, with the addition of English subtitles during the live TV broadcasts.
The largest populations of foreign workers in the Maldives are from Bangladesh and India.
