The first test pile of Thilamale' Bridge; touted as the largest infrastructure development project in the Maldives till date, has been erected.

Prior to installation of permanent bridge pillars, test piles are required for analytical and monitoring purposes. The first marine test pile rose above sea level at the project site earlier, reported on November 16, Wednesday.

Project contractor Afcons Infrastructure launched test pile installation, earlier in 2022. Concrete works for the piles commenced November 9.

According to Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI), the contractor will commence installation of the permanent structure before the year ends. Pillars erected in dry land, was first erected in Male' City, at the end of the city's industrial village - west end.

The project launched from Male' City, with the contractor aiming to link the country's capital with village island; Vilimale' under the first phase, which is estimated to conclude sometime in 2023. Second phase involves linking Gulhifalhu with industrial island; Thilafushi, which will be completed in 2024 according to the contractor.

The largest urban development project in the Maldives since the Sinamale' Bridge construction, Thilamale' Bridge is funded through India's EXIM Bank.

The project is valued at USD 500 million (MVR 7.7 billion). The project is funded through EXIM Bank's line of credit worth USD 400 million, with another USD 100 million grant extended by India.
