The project is under a USD 800 million line of credit from Exim Bank of India at with MVR 2 billion to be spent on the project. The project is being awarded to JMC Projects Limited of India, which is already implementing flat construction and water and sewerage projects in the Maldives.

The project, under a credit line signed between Exim Bank of India and the Maldives government in 2019, will see the construction of a new 2.46km runway and a terminal with a capacity of 1.3 million passengers per annum. Facilities will also be established to further expand international flights.

Upon completion, the airport will be able to serve Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft to facilitate international flights. The airline will also be able to operate direct flights from the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Africa to Hanimaadhoo.

The project will increase business and employment opportunities and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the northern atolls of Maldives. The airport will facilitate air freighting imported goods directly to the north which will in turn boost trade and economy of the northern areas.

The Economic Ministry said the project will commence later this year and will be completed in 2024.
