Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announced last night that, due to the increasing number of young people memorizing the Holy Quran in the Maldives each year, Hafiz (a person who has memorized the Quran) certification will be held as a separate ceremony starting next year.

Speaking at the Islamic Centre in Male' during the announcement of the results of the 36th National Quran Competition, Minister Shaheem emphasized the importance of nurturing a generation grounded in the basic principles of the Quran, in addition to reciting it beautifully.

He highlighted the competition as a crucial foundation for this goal.

Shaheem noted that the Quran recitation competition has produced many talented students and scholars.

He expressed gratitude to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the founder of the competition, and assured that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will continue to support the competition during his administration.

The Minister stressed the importance of holding the Hafiz graduation ceremony at the national level.

"The reason is, through this competition, it has been a long-standing practice to present prizes to those who memorize the Quran, as very few memorized the Quran each year. But now the number is going up to more than 30," he said.

The Hafiz certification and 'golden crown' have traditionally been awarded at the ceremony announcing the results of the national Quran recitation competition.

At last night's ceremony, 32 individuals received their Hafiz certifications.
