Tree Top Hospital will be given permission to start In vitro fertilisation (IVF) services once the final guidelines have been finalised and submitted, Health Ministry said today.

The Treetop Hospital in Hulhumalé applied for government permission earlier this year to start IVF services in Maldives. An IVF centre is currently being developed at the hospital.

A Health Ministry official said the final guidelines for IVF services have been sent to the hospital. Once the standard is determined and set in accordance with the guidelines, permission will be granted, he said.

Treatments available for natural fertility problems are Intrauterine insemination (IUI) and IVF. Of these, only IUI treatment is currently available in the Maldives.

For the locals, IVF is a costly, time-consuming treatment that has to be sought abroad. Therefore, many people want this treatment to be available in the country.

Treetop Hospital is also working towards implementing the principles of the guideline for the treatment. However, the date of service initiation is yet to be announced.

Treetop Hospital has also trained its doctors and staff from abroad to start IVF.
