Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), on Friday, announced that former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is undergoing medical examinations while admitted at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
MCS transferred the former president to IGMH on Wednesday. He is undergoing heart-related treatment at the Cardiac Centre at IGMH.
An MCS Spokesperson added that Yameen's condition remains stable and that no serious cause for concerns was present.
Convicted on money laundering charges related to the embezzlement of MVR 3.3 billion from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), former President was sentenced to five years of imprisonment and a fine of USD 5 million.
Yameen, who was jailed in November of last year, claims that his medical complications require treatment from abroad, as advised by his doctors.
Therefore, the judges' bench had asked Yameen to submit the relevant documents to court for review.
According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)'s publicised report on the MMPRC scandal, most of the stolen funds were siphoned off to SOF Pvt Ltd, which made a deposit of USD 1 million to Yameen's personal account at Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).
Although Yameen initially agreed to transfer the USD 1 million to a joint escrow account at Bank of Maldives (BML) with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), it later surfaced that the money Yameen transferred to the account was not the USD 1 million he received from SOF. The funds from SOF were instead deposited in a general investment account at MIB.
