Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has said that to resolve the issue of lengthy queues at main government hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), more hospitals that provide specialty services will need to be developed.

In an interview he gave to Mihaaru News yesterday, Nazim said that dedicated hospitals for thalassemia and cancer treatment will be built during this term. In addition to this, there are also plans to establish a dedicated hospital for women and children, he revealed. He stated that building dedicated hospitals for various specialties would present an improvement to the health care system.

The Cardiac Centre and the National Uro-renal and Fertility Centre at IGMH were opened during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, of which Nazim was also a part.

Nazim said that the establishment of these centres had greatly minimized the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment for heart and kidney diseases.

He pointed out that with the further broadening of health services in-country, and employment of more doctors, even less people will need to travel abroad for medical treatments.

He said that if Maldives' health sector fails to develop at this time when globally, technology is advancing and more diseases are being learned about, then new challenges will be posed.

IGMH has also announced that they will be setting up GP Clinics in four wards of Male' in a bid to contribute towards shortening the waiting queues at the hospital.
