Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has expressed the concerns of Maldivian journalists at the International Federation of Journalists’ (IFJ) congress held in Muscat, Oman.

Organizations representing journalists from around the world participated in IFJ’s congress held from May 31 to June 3. MJA’s steering committee member Mohamed Junaid had represented Maldives while addressing the congress.

MJA said they had shared the obstacles faced by Maldivian journalists at the congress, and brought it to the attention of the international community. They had further discussed ways to improve their organizational structure, as well as activities they plan to carry out in the future.

MJ has also expressed interest in becoming a permanent member of IFJ at the congress. The Federation of Asia Pacific Journalists Union has been established with organizations representing journalists from Asia and the Asia Pacific.

MJA said the Maldives also supported the resolutions submitted by the permanent members of IFJ, regarding the protection of the rights of journalists. This includes the case filed at the International Criminal Court to investigate Israeli atrocities targeting Palestinian journalists.

The organization said it had officially met with those elected to the IFJ Steering Committee and held discussions regarding the affairs of the press.

The IFJ Congress is held annually by the group. More than 200 journalists and media from 99 countries took part in the congress.

IFJ was established in 1926. The Federation represents 187 unions and organizations of journalists from 140 countries.
