The government donated USD 50,000 (MVR 770,000) to its neighbouring country India, in response to the devastation caused by excessive floods in Kerala State.
In a statement issued from the President’s Office, the government conveyed their condolences to the victims of the floods and landslides in Kerala, expressing hope that the USD 50,000 may help rehabilitate the lives of those suffering.
The latest figures indicate that the death toll for this natural disaster has reached a total of nearly 200 people.
Times of India reports that more than 60,000 people are currently being lodged in various relief camps across 14 districts of the southern state, following the unprecedented monsoon rains that have triggered floods and landslides in the area.
Affected cities in the state of Kerala include Cochin and Trivandrum, are often frequented by Maldivians seeking medical treatment. However, Maldivian families present in these cities during the time of the flooding were safely evacuated to Trivandrum.
