Department of National Registration (DNR) revealed that they have temporarily halted renewal of National Identity Cards for those applying to amend ID information.

According to an announcement by DNR, people who change their ID information will not be eligible to vote in the Presidential Election on September 23, as the Elections Commission (EC) has already finalized the voters' list.

If a voter's personal information such as name, address and date of birth differs between the voters' list and ID card, that individuals will no longer be eligible for voting.

According to DNR, many people are recently applying to update their addresses on their IDs, after registering as citizens of capital Male. To date, DNR had been issuing ID card renewals only if the citizen signed an agreement stating that they had no issues with being unable to vote.

DNR also stated that as they are not involved in compiling the voters' list, they cannot take responsibility for any clashes in information.

While the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has opened to change citizenship to Male, they have assured that citizens' addresses will not be formally changed until after the elections in September.

DNR will resume issuing and renewal of ID's with information changes after the Presidential Election.
