President’s Office's spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali, on Wednesday, stated that the Auditor General’s Office has given incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom until the end of his term to submit his pending financial statements.
In a tweet posted on his official twitter account, Muaz stated that the Auditor General had sent a letter to the President’s Office a few days earlier, giving the president until November 17 to submit pending statements. Muaz stated that all matters regarding the financial statement, which have to be submitted as per the law, were discussed with the Auditor General’s Office.
Muaz also highlighted the fact that certain presidents had not submitted their financial statements at all, and that no actions were taken against them.
Auditor General Hassan Ziyath had verified that President Yameen had not submitted any financial statements since 2013, in a letter sent to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) earlier.
On Wednesday, ACC had recommended that the outgoing president's failure to submit his financial statement should be taken to the Public Finance Committee of the Parliament, following a privately-filed complaint received by the commission regarding the matter.
ACC has decided not to launch an investigation into the Auditor General's Office's failure to take action against the President Yameen, as the lack of action in itself did not prove corruption.
The President's Office had previously guaranteed that the statements had been submitted, in response to accusations by the opposition that claimed otherwise. The Office also stated that it would submit the financial statement shortly after the new format was finalised by the Auditor General's Office.
