Kaashidhoo lawmaker Abdulla Jabir, on Tuesday, was appointed leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).

Following a unanimous decision by the party's council, Jabir took over the highest seat of leadership while the party's former leader, Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) was designated as its new deputy leader.

Moreover, former Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau was elected as the party's registrar and former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's then spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz, was appointed to the position of party spokesperson.

In an interview with local media Mihaaru, Nasheed stated that having a leader such as Jabir is sure to raise the party to new heights, adding that he sees DRP securing a stronger foothold within the political arena.

Nasheed reasoned the party's current weakened and inactive status was due to the unpaid debts incurred.

On that note, out of the total of MVR 20.1 million owed, Nasheed revealed that MVR 15 million had been repaid.

"We will prioritize hosting a party congress within the next three months", said its deputy leader, adding that activities to increase party membership were already in planning.

DRP was formulated by former long-serving president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 2008, following the implementation of a multi-party system.

However, internal conflicts within DRP resulted in the formulation of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the leading at-present opposition party.
