Leading members of the opposition coalition, on Sunday, met President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to discuss the case of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The Criminal Court sentenced the former president to five years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of USD 5 million on November 28 after finding him guilty of money laundering.

Spokesperson for the President's Office, Ibrahim Hood, confirmed that President Solih met with the opposition as per their request. However, he stated that he was unaware of the discussions conducted during the meeting.

In addition to top members of People's National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), some opposition-aligned parliamentarians also joined the meeting.

Guraidhoo MP Ghassan Maumoon, PPM Vice President and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam as well as PNC Vice President and Maavah MP Mohamed Saeed were among the attendees.

Maintaining that Yameen's verdict was politically motivated and unjust, the opposition coalition appealed the case at the High Court on November 30. The opposition also conveyed concerns over the former president's jail sentence to ambassadors of several foreign nations.
