The body of Adam Athhar, who died in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) while receiving treatment after attempting to take his own life in his cell in Dhoonidhoo Prison, is being sent to India today to conduct a post mortem.

Police said that Athhar's body was taken to India this morning, and said that the post mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

A timeline of Athhar's death shared by Police indicate that officers had discovered Athhar having attempted to hang himself at 19:02 hrs on Monday.

Athhar, 32, of Happyland in Shaviyani atoll Milandhoo, was arrested on Thursday last week for holding his partner hostage at knifepoint. In an attempt to rescue the woman, Police had hit Ahthar on the head with batons. He had been arrested after receiving treatment for injuries sustained at ADK Hospital. He was later re-hospitalized for further monitoring due to vomiting at IGMH, and taken back into custody when hospital tests, including psychological assessments, indicated his condition as normal, Police said then.

On Tuesday night, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan met with reporters and showed security camera footage showing Athhar making the attempt to take his own life.

As seen in the video, no officers were in the vicinity of Athhar's cell at the time of the attempt. He was discovered 30 minutes after his body became motionless, by an officer passing by the cell.
