The new pay framework for the higher education sector would see the salaries of the staff raised between 14 and 99 percent, while administrative staff would also receive an increment of 35 percent, the government revealed today.

At a press conference held at the President's Office, the Minister of Finance, Ibrahim Ameer, said that consultations were carried out with representatives of the Maldives National University (MNU) and the Islamic University of the Maldives (IUM) about the new pay framework.

He also said that staff would now be eligible for promotions every two years.

According to the information published by the ministry, there are 376 administrative staff employed at the National University and 64 administrative staff at the Islamic University.

A total of MVR 951,973 per month is spent from the state budget for these staff, which adds up to MVR 11.3 million per year.

Minister Amir said that, with the salary changes brought this month, 767 employees at the National University, the Islamic University, and the Maldives Polytechnic will receive salary bumps.

The new change will cost the government a total of MVR 62.5 million annually, which is an increase of MVR 5.2 million compared to what the expenditure was before.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced plans to revise the salary structure of higher education sector staff in his address at the parliament opening on February 6. The new pay framework for higher education sector staff took effect on March 1.

The administration also announced that efforts to harmonise pay across the board were in the final stages. The new, harmonised pay structure for all government employees would eliminate discrepancies and ensure uniform pay for staff in the same position and level in different government offices and institutions.
