North-Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla has requested for a copy of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report on Maldivian economic achievements and prospects.

In a letter to Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer, Eva said according to the IMF press release issued on December 20, 2022, a team of technical staff from the agency had visited Maldives and prepared a report on the country's economic growth based off of financial information received after consulting with relevant authorities.

The report was assessed by the IMF's Executive Board, which noted the worrying increase in the level of public debt and identified "sustained fiscal consolidation" as a "top priority," Eva said.

In her letter, the MP asked for copy of the report as after 2020, under the IMF Article IV, the agency has not published its reports on Maldives.

"Please make available a copy of the report mentioned in IMF's press release on Maldives under Article IV as it provides the most detailed understanding of the agency's views on the Government's objectives regarding the economic and financial situation of the country," Eva's letter read.

Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer said the IMF report says Maldives economy is growing rapidly. This, he said, is the result of the government's economic policy and measures taken to overcome the Covid pandemic.

"The Maldivian economy has returned to pre-pandemic levels. Our target of 1.6 million tourists for 2022 has already been achieved. This year we project to attract 1.8 million annual arrivals,” Minister Ameer said via Twitter.
