Former President Mohamed Nasheed stated on Thursday that he has no qualms about any candidate contesting in the upcoming parliamentary elections from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking at MDP rally held in Thinadhoo to garner support for MDP candidates contesting for the eight constituencies of Huvadhoo Atoll, Nasheed stated that he has questioned about which candidates he is backing.
"We determine our candidates through an internal vetting process. When chosen, that is a candidate for all of us", Nasheed added "that is a candidate for all MDP members."
Despite Nasheed's revelation, MDP had previously announced that the party will not endorse or participate in the campaign of Abdul Mughnee who is contesting for Thinadhoo South constituency on MDP's ticket.
The party withdrew support for Mughnee due to domestic violence allegations raised against him by his former wife.
However, President Nasheed took part in Mughnee's campaign rally held on Thursday and delivered a speech as well.
Moreover, Nasheed draped the Agenda 19 sash on Mughnee during the rally.
Tensions are also on the rise between those contesting for Thimarafushi constituency after Jumhooree Party's Abdulla Riyaz declared himself the government's candidate despite Mohamed Musthafa running against him on ruling MDP's ticket.
President Solih is currently facing harsh criticism from Musthafa's supporters for not countering Abdulla Riyaz's declarations.
In the midst of all the pressure, Nasheed stated on Thursday night that government's candidates do not exist, as all candidates are the people's candidates representing the Maldivian public.
"It's been ages since the Sultan's eight members sat in parliament. Our green constituency was founded by the people, to establish a people's parliament", Nasheed said.
