Third case of hanging while in Kulhudhuffushi police custody

Police have said that a third inmate has attempted to hang himself while in Kulhudhuffushi Police custody, and has been provided treatment at the Kulhudhuffushi hospital.

Police have said that a third inmate has attempted to hang himself while in Kulhudhuffushi Police custody, and has been provided treatment at the Kulhudhuffushi hospital.

This is the second case of attempted hanging by inmates under Kulhudhuffushi custody within the week, and the third case within the month.

The first case involved a 34 year old man arrested for damaging property while under intoxication who was arrested on April 2. Two days after he was taken into custody, he hanged himself in his cell. He succumbed to his injuries last Tuesday while receiving treatment.

A Police Media Official said that the second case occurred last Monday. This involved a person in custody while investigation proceeded. He was rushed to the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital on discovery.

An official from the hospital said that the 26 year old has since been released after having been provided treatment.

Police said that they are looking into the cases of hangings while in custody. They said that the information gleaned from these investigations will be shared with the Human Rights Commission of Maldives and the National Integrity Commission, and that appropriate action will be taken.
