Hussain Fazeel Haroon has made history by breaking the 30-year-old national record in the ongoing Odisha State Athletics Championship in India. Fazeel's remarkable feat saw him surpass the previous record set by Hussain Riyaz Samad (Beybe Riya), who completed the 1500m run in 4 minutes and 0.6 seconds. Fazeel shattered this long standing record by an impressive margin, finishing the race in just 3 minutes and 57.44 seconds.

The breaking of Samad's three-decade-old record was a significant moment in the history of national athletics. Fazeel, who first discovered his passion for running during the Dhiraagu Road Race, had been determined to surpass the 1500m record ever since he joined the national team in 2015.

Fazeel, who holds the record for the 5000m race, expressed his initial lack of awareness about national records. However, upon discovering them, he set his sights on breaking two records, including the 1500m race.

Fazeel narrowly missed breaking the record during the 2019 competition in Baku by four seconds. However, his recent sub-four-minute finish marked a significant milestone after dedicated training and preparation.

Fazeel has consistently rewritten long-standing records throughout his career. In 2019, he shattered the 26-year-old 5000m record in Doha, Qatar, completing the race in an impressive time of 15 minutes and 30 seconds, surpassing Beybe Riya's previous record of 15 minutes and 36 seconds. Additionally, Fazeel broke Kuda Hussain's 1989 record in the 10,000m event back in 2017.

Fazeel's achievements extend beyond the track, as he also holds records in road races, specifically in the 10km and 5km categories. "My goal was to surpass long-standing records, and now I have accomplished two of them," said Fazeel.

Looking ahead, Fazeel's next target is to secure a medal for the Maldives in an international tournament, competing in the middle-distance category. With his exceptional talent and determination, Fazeel continues to be a rising star in the world of athletics, inspiring others with his record-breaking performance and dedication.
