Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore Vivian Balakrishnan on Tuesday.

During the meeting held at Paradise Island Resort, on the sideline of the 4th Indian Oceans Conference, Minister Shahid expressed his gratitude for Singapore's hospitality towards the delegation from Maldives during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's official visit to Singapore in July.

Noting that the visit was a success, Minister Shahid highlighted the MoU that was signed between Foreign Ministries of the two countries and the signing of the Open Skies Agreement. He further added that Maldives signed the Singapore Convention on Mediation on August 7, 2019.

In addition, Minister Shahid reaffirmed the government's commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. He also noted that Singapore is an important regional partner and a close friend of the Maldives.

Regarding the 4th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC), the foreign minister expressed that it would be an important platform for regional cooperation on issues of importance to all the countries in the region.

Minister Shahid also noted that Singapore, IOC's Vice-Chair, has done excellent work in bringing the issue of oceans to the forefront of the discussions.

Moreover, he further noted challenges relating to the environment, counter-terrorism and technical cooperation.

The foreign minister was accompanied by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Ambassador of Maldives to Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razzak and Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hassan Hussain Shihab.
