The two-day fundraising event, organised by Malé City Council, being held to raise money for the renovation of mosques in Malé city has raised a total of MVR 313,397.90 on the first day, according to the council.

The event, "Chaalu Miskiyh" which translates to "Beautiful Mosque" is being held at Artificial Beach from January 6 to 7.

Today is the last day of the event, which will be accompanied by a children's evening. The event will be held from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Those who wish to donate to the cause can do so through the council's website, or through online transfers.

While Malé City Council is tasked with the maintenance of mosques located in the City, the council is facing budget constraints, which has lead to various works being delayed.

Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had earlier said that the state had provided MVR 1 million for mosque repairs. The council had previously spent MVR 10 million on the project but it needs to spend about MVR 14 million more, he said.

Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir expressed concern about the fundraising event on the state-run media, PSM. He said that while the state had provided the council with MVR 1 million for mosque repairs in 2020, the council had failed to submit the report of the use of funds. The council later stated that it was still possession of the funds.

Last year, MVR 2 million was allocated for the mosque refurbishments, and the city council was informed that the money would be released after the council sent the bills of expenses, the Minister said. However, he said that the council had not contacted the Ministry regarding the matter.
