Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef has also announced his decision to run for the position of president of The Democrats in its first election scheduled for December.
Hassan, who also serves as the party's interim chairperson, made the announcement in a tweet and appealed for the support of party members.
Hassan is the founder of The Democrats, which was officially registered on July 12.
The decision to conduct the first election of The Democrats, led by former President and former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed, was made during a meeting of the provisional council held on Monday. Following the announcement of the election date, Hussain Amr, the running mate of the party's presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb, also declared his candidacy for the position of president of The Democrats.
It has been revealed that in addition to them, Ilyas has also expressed his intention to run for the presidency. However, no official announcement regarding his candidacy has been made so far.
