An expatriate who was involved directly in trafficking people and forcing them into prostitution in the Maldives, faces 15 years of jail time.
Maldives Criminal Court had ordered the jail time on a Bangladeshi national, named Monir who was apprehended in 2019 in connection of the crimes.
Maldives state had pressed two distinct charges against Monir, which was the criminal offense of human trafficking and activities affiliated with prostitution.
Monir faces 15 years of jail time collectively for both the criminal offenses, which will be counted after deducting two years of 10 months jail time he had served in remand.
On the other hand, authorities had arrested another Bangladeshi individual named Siddiq in relation to the offenses, who was ordered with a jail term of 11 years for his involvement.
