President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Saturday that one of the most important policies of the government is treating all Maldivian citizens equally when providing essential services.

In his speech to commemorate the International Human Rights Day, President Solih said the government would continue to provide essential services related to human rights to the Maldivian people.

President Solih has previously said that it is a goal of his administration to ensure all inhabited islands have access to clean water and sewerage systems before the end of his five-year term. He noted that projects have been handed over to make sure that this goal will be achieved.

Reflecting on the United Nations' theme for this year's Human Rights Day, "Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All," President Solih stated that human rights do not equate to providing basic necessities; he added that providing services includes responsibilities associated with those rights.

According to the President, these include:

- Everyone has the right to life, as well as a responsibility to not harm others

- The responsibility to not encroach on another's goods and property when asking for the right to earn an income.

- The responsibility to not infringe upon the dignity of others with words or with action when asking for the right to protect one's own dignity.

The President also emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of impediments to the process of establishing human rights in the community.

"The entire community must come together to prevent physical, sexual and domestic violence against children and women. Special attention should be paid to prevent social issues and crimes that restrict human rights," he said.

The President also noted the importance of providing community and familial love to elderly citizens amongst us, and the need to pay attention and give love and affection to children in unfortunate situations.

He said that treating each other with respect and dignity is the root of guaranteeing an independent and just society.
