The government today signed an agreement with China's Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to construct roads and municipal facilities in Gulhi Falhu.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the President's Office.

While the previous administration under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih allocated land from the reclaimed areas of Gulhi Falhu and additional reclaimed land to Male' residents, basic services had yet to be established.

CMEC, which was awarded the contract, will oversee the development of several essential services in Gulhi Falhu, including:

- Establishment of an electricity distribution network.

- Establishment of water, sewerage, and drainage systems.

- The modernization of roads.

- The setup of a fuel storage and distribution network.

Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muthalib said that this project, part of a broader effort to alleviate congestion in Male', reflects the government's commitment to improving the living conditions for people in the Male' region. He said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu prioritizes initiatives aimed at making life easier for Male' residents.

The previous administration commissioned the Dutch company Boskalis to reclaim 150 hectares of land from the Gulhi Falhu reef, which was completed last year. Following President Muizzu assuming office a decision was made to reclaim another 85 hectares.

This expansion has led to changes in the land use plan, with 3,520 plots to be allocated in the area. Previously, the government had allocated more than 9,000 plots across Gulhi Falhu, Hulhumale', and Giraavaru Falhu.
