Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has brought the second vessel required to start bunkering services up north of the country.

As the state owned company prepares to start providing bunkering services in Maldives, the first vessel required to start the process was brought into the country last week.

The second vessel has now docked in Haa Dhaalu atoll's Kulhudhuffushi island as well.

MPL's CEO Mohamed Wajeeh said that the two bunkering vessels, a tug boat and pilot boats are now in Ihavandhippolhu in preparation of commencing the offshore bunkering services.

"The International Ship and Port Security Gate (ISPS Gate) has also been installed and all the necessary preparations have been completed to start the bunkering service," Wajeeh said in a Facebook post.

Although State Trading Organisation (STO) and MPL planned to start the services yesterday, it was postponed due to delays in the vessel's arrival owing to bad weather.

STO signed with Netherland's Vitol on March 13th to implement the Maldives Economic Gateway International Bunkering Facility.

Wajeeh said that with the bunkering services, international customers would receive 14 other services from the location. This will create additional income opportunities for other government companies, private companies and individuals, he said.

MPL also launched a special website ums.mv to provide potential users with information about the maritime services provided from the facility in Maldives.

“Hopefully, as the second phase of this project, the oil terminal and oil tanks will be installed in the area,” he said.

More than 300 new ships sail daily near Ihavandippollu, the government said.
