Political parties have condemned today's attack on PG Shameem, urging a swift and thorough investigation, followed by the apprehension and prosecution of those found to be responsible.
Jumhoori Party (JP), Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats have condemned this morning's attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.
In the assault near Noor Mosque this morning, Shaheem is believed to have been attacked with a hammer, sustaining injuries to his left forearm.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that there is no room in a democratic community for politically motivated attacks. He called on the perpetrators to be swiftly caught and brought to justice.
Responding to the attack, opposition MDP has criticized the government.
They alleged that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, since assuming office, has failed to ensure safety and protection to citizens as well as those fulfilling constitutional responsibilities.
"It is due to the impunity granted to perpetrators in this government that they are attacking senior State Officials without fear of repercussions. This is due to the close relations that senior government officials have with criminal elements in the society," the party said.
The Democrats described the attack as a 'dangerous signal', saying an attack on an individual carrying crucial responsibilities of the criminal justice system is an attack on the entire system as a whole.
Both parties urged to expedite a serious investigation into the attack and to ensure those responsible are apprehended.
Jumhoori Party's Leader Gasim Ibrahim called for a swift response, to arrest the perpetrators and convict them as per the law. He said that this is an important step to ascertain such offences are not repeated.
