The electric vehicle (EV) charging station to be developed by State Electric Company (STELCO) will have the capacity to charge eight vehicles at once, said the company today.

Development of the station, which is located on Dhon-adharaadha Magu, next to STELCO's head office, began yesterday.

STELCO's Managing Director Hussain Fahumy told local media outlet Mihaaru that there are still only a few electric vehicles in the country.

He said the station's development is in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's environmental policies and efforts to reduce the country's carbon footprint and encourage the use of electric vehicles.

The company also highlighted that only they would be able to bring charging systems into the country as it is an electric service.

"We are developing this place with renewable energy sources. All electricity needed here will also be generated using solar. When we start this, more people will bring their cars and start using it, won't they?" he said.

Fahumy previously said that the station would be modelled on South Korea, the country with the most number of public charging stations. With this model, a charging station would be developed for every three cars, he said.

Plans to develop EV charging stations were also finalised back when President Muizzu was mayor of Malé City. At the time, the council's transport committee also formulated research plans for the project.
