It has been revealed that the installation of additional elevators inside each of the Hiya flats in Hulhumale Phase 2 has been contracted to a company from China.

Installing addition elevators inside each Hiya flat was a presidential pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during the campaigns for the presidential elections last year. Subsequently, the president had announced that the installation of the elevators has already been contracted to a company during the Mayoral elections last month.

While no details on the contractor was revealed by the State, a board displaying details of this project has been posted inside the lobby area of the Hiya flats.

The board reveals that the project has been contracted to a Chinese construction company named Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co. Ltd.

While no financial budgets on the contract of the project was disclosed, the budget deliberations for this year indicates that MVR 200 million has been allocated for the installation of these elevators inside the Hiya towers.

During the presidential campaign last year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had assured that the two elevators installed inside each tower will consist of an elevator large enough to carry stretchers and an elevator with a 14-person capacity.

Some of the sixteen 25-storey Hiya towers built in Phase 2 during former president Abdulla Yameen’s tenure has three elevators installed in the residence while some flats have four elevators. However, many residents of these towers have issued complaints due to the difficulties faced in traveling from one storey to the other as a result of the scarcity of elevators within a widely populated area. The 16 Hiya towers in Phase 2 are currently accommodating over 50,000 people.
