A special center for treating mental illnesses has been opened at Hulhumale' Hospital on Monday.
First Lady Fazna Ahmed inaugurated the center at a ceremony held at the hospital on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. The center was built with the assistance of India's Cadabams Group.
At the ceremony, First Lady said that good mental health can only be achieved if everyone works together and treating such cases is not the sole responsibility of the mental health center.
According to Mariya Saeed, CEO of Hulhumale' Hospital, services should be developed with the increase in the number of people seeking healthcare. She said that with the growing population in Hulhumale', a rise in mental health issues have been reported.
Mariya said that 255 people have been treated so far since the hospital started treating mental health problems on August 2.
However, the biggest challenge faced in providing mental health services is the lack of Maldivian professionals.
The mental health center at the Hospital Hospital started with two psychiatrists, two clinical psychologists and a counsellor.
Services provided by the center will include psychiatry, psychology, counseling and online consultation. In addition to therapy and counseling services, individual and family therapy sessions and awareness programs for school children will also be conducted.
The hospital has established a call center number, 1417, for consultation appointments and on-call-psychiatrist services.
