Taxi driver fatally stabbed in Hulhumale'

A taxi driver was fatally stabbed in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale' late Wednesday.

Maldives Police Service revealed that they received reports of the attack at 21:07 hours and attended to the scene immediately. The victim, aged 59, was taken to Hulhumale' Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 21:50 hours.

Post the attack, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed declared in a tweet that the Serious Crime Department is currently working to identify and apprehend the culprits. Noting that the police are also inspecting all vehicles travelling to Hulhumale', CP Hameed requested anyone who had information on the crime to step forward.

Police did not disclose further details.

However, local media Mihaaru reported that the taxi driver was a man named Qasim Hassan from Maamigili, Alif Dhaalu Atoll, who was registered at capital Male' City. He was reportedly stabbed in the neck and arm.

Photographs of the crime scene circulating on social media depicted the victim lying in a pool of blood on the road. According to media reports, witnesses claimed that his vehicle was also in the area.
