Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, revealed that that the cause of Mohamed Sidhrathulla's death was drowning, as per the preliminary report on post-mortem examinations conducted in India.

The body of the 31-year-old Maldivian male was recovered from the lagoon off the western coast of Male' City on October 23, after being reported to the authorities at around 1040 hrs by a group of divers.

In addition to the cause of death, the police disclosed that the numerous injuries on Sidhrathulla's body were the result of sea creatures scavenging on the body as it decomposed in the lagoon.

Although Sidhrathulla's family raised objections against the autopsy and wrote to the police requesting that the body be handed over, authorities maintained that the investigation would continue under the rights granted to the police by the Criminal Procedure Code.

The body was handed over to the family following postmortem studies on November 5 and buried later the same day.

Noting that further postmortem investigations were still being conducted in India, the police assured that investigations concerning the case would be continued.

Sidhrathulla was last seen alive on surveillance footages recorded between 09:00 and 12:00 hours on October 23. The video showed Sidhrahtulla walking towards the western coastline.
