Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam claims that most of the ongoing housing projects will not conclude before the culmination of the incumbent presidential term.
He made the confirmation in writing to the query posed by parliamentarian Eva Abdulla regarding the matter.
The lawmaker had attempted to gain insight into the recent updates on the housing schemes that fall under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's pledges.
In his explanation, minister Aslam clarified that the current government initiated a 5,000 unit social housing scheme. Out of the total, construction of 2,000 units have been contracted to JMC India Limited.
The development site was assigned to the contractor in November 2021, while the project is estimated to conclude sometime in 2025.
Another 2,000 units were contracted to NBC India in December last year, while the units are expected to be completed sometime during 2024.
Meanwhile, the Maldives government had contracted Apollo Holdings for the construction of 1,042 units which will reportedly conclude during 2024 as well.
During his presidential address at the first session of 2022 parliamentary sitting, incumbent statesman Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pledged to provide social housing options for Male' City residents from the Greater Male' Region.
President claimed that at least 1,000 housing units will be provided to Male' citizens from the satellite town of Hulhumale' with another 2,000 units from Gulhifalhu and another 2,000 units from Giraavaru; following land-reclamation.
Meanwhile, the slow pace of the ongoing social housing projects has attracted public scrutiny and criticism.
