Aasandha available for cessation services: Nazim

Health Minister Abdullah Nazim today said that Aasandha services will be available for people who are addicted to tobacco seeking to quit.

A decision was reached in Sunday's cabinet to set up tobacco cessation clinics in all islands of Maldives to help people quit smoking.

The Health Ministry today held a press conference to discuss the issue of smoking cessation treatment. Nicotine patches and gum will be available through Aasandha to encourage people who are addicted to tobacco to quit, he said.

Noting that budget has been allocated to launch the cessation service throughout the country, the minister said the work of training the required personnel has already begin. The ministry aims to make the service available in all islands within the next few months, he said.

Cessation services are provided by three hospitals and a clinic in Male' City to help people who want to quit smoking. The service is now available in 48 islands across Maldives.

The ministry has also set up a special hotline to help those seeking to quit smoking.
