The state, on Thursday, decided to extend temporary housing by an additional three months for the families displaced in the fire that tore through a street in Henveiru Ward in capital Male' during September 2019.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) initially revealed that 400 individuals were displaced in the fire that broke out in a chemical storage facility, burning through a total of four warehouses and seven houses in the area.
Since then, the state has provided temporary housing for the victims of the incident.
However, five families residing in Gaakoshi Flat were given an eviction notice for the end of the month, out of which only one family has relocated.
According to NDMA, the state provided a three-month extension, based on the current circumstances, for the families to continue living in the flats.
Two other families, previously informed to evict by the end of September, are also currently living in Gaakoshi.
The state made housing arrangements in Gaakoshi for a total of 29 individuals from seven residences affected in the fire. Different families were provided different periods of temporary housing, based on the assessments for rebuilding their houses destroyed in the fire.
Following the most destructive fire incident in capital Male' in recent history, the state reformed guidelines on handling and storing chemicals, in addition to relocating chemical storage facilities to industrial island Thilafushi in Kaafu Atoll.
