State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced on Saturday night that it would be adjusting next month's electricity bill for customers who paid last month's bill before the special discount was announced by the government.

The discount was initially announced by the government for electricity and water used during the month of Ramadan owing to the rising temperatures and considering that it is generally a high consumption month, meaning the bills would be unusually high.

However, as Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, and the bills are generated in accordance with the Gregorian calendar, the utility bills for the month of Ramadan were split into two months, and only the first month's bill had the promised discounts applied.

Public outcry followed the second month's bill which was generated and distributed this week, which then prompted the government to decide to extend the discount to these bills as well.

However, by this time some customers had already paid their bills.

Addressing this concern, Managing Director of STELCO Hussain Fahumy said that the new discounted bills would be sent out to customers last night and that the bills already paid for would be adjusted in the next billing cycle.

"I assure you that STELCO will always continue to facilitate everything that can be done to make people's life easier, in accordance with the strong policies of the government and expectations of the people," said Fahmy.

While it is unclear how much the total discounted value would sum up to for the second leg of the Ramadan bills, Fahmy previously revealed that the first round of discounts amounted to over MVR 20 million.
