Both Jabir and his son, Muaz face defeat in the elections

Parliamentarian of the Kaashidhoo Constituency, Abdulla Jabir and his son, Ahmed Muaz Abdulla Jabir who contested for the Mahibadhoo seat, has both been faced with defeat in the parliamentary elections held yesterday.

Jabir is the current member representing the Kaashidhoo Constituency in the 19th parliamentary elections. While six candidates including Jabir contested for the seat, Munthazim Ibrahim (Muntha) fielded by the ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC), won with 1217 votes.

Jabir, who competed as an independent candidate accumulated 355 votes. Mohamed Kamal, who also participated in the polls as a independent candidate, collected 104 votes, while Ahmed Sabah (Sobbe), also an independent candidate, received just nine votes. The candidate fielded by opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Naseer Mohamed, amassed a total of 365 votes.

Muaz competed for the Mahibadhoo Constituency under MDP's ticket . He, however, lost the seat to the current MP representing the Constituency, Ahmed Thariq, affiliated with PNC. Thariq had defended his seat for three consecutive terms, making this his 11th year as a lawmaker in the parliament.

Thariq secured this Constituency with a total of 1214 votes while Muaz had collected 898 votes.

Present interim results indicate that ruling party, PNC has won 71 of the 93 seats of parliament, securing super majority. Opposition MDP has won 12 seats while government affiliated party, Maldives National Party (MNP) was elected to one seat. Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), also affiliated with PNC had received 2 seats while independent candidates who participated in the election had secured 6 seats altogether. Some of these candidates were endorsed by PNC.
