Zuhoor to be appointed Chairperson of FAM Normalization Committee

FIFA has appointed former Minister of Sports Ahmed Zuhoor as Chairperson of the Normalization Committee assigned to oversee tasks of the Football Association of Maldives, reports Mihaaru News.

FIFA is expected to appoint former Minister of Sports Ahmed Zuhoor as Chairperson of the Normalization Committee assigned to oversee tasks of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

It has been learnt that a committee constituting of AFC and FIFA delegates have lodged a submission to instate Zuhoor as Chairperson of the committee, as reported by Mihaaru.

Zuhoor declared that he has no knowledge of this appointment. However, experts of the public administration sector revealed that the former Minister was earlier interviewed by an international panel.

In response to a question posed by Mihaaru News on whether he will accept the position if offered, Zuhoor ensured he will receive any opportunity to serve the country with utmost joy.

"But I do not have any knowledge of being appointed to any such thing. There is no confirmation in relation to this," he added.

Zuhoor had previously served as the Minister of Sport for nearly two years during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. He had proceeded several initiatives to progress and reform FAM during this period as well.

Moreover, expressing concerns over FAM's procedures, he had also delivered a letter to FIFA at the time.

The term of this temporary committee appointed to address FAM's dire governance and debt crises will expire on July 31 next year. The committee will be composed of four general members in addition to a Chairperson, including a female.

FAM's Normalization Committee will be responsible for reforming the governance of the federation, amending its constitution and organizing a re-election.

Additionally, an audit will be conducted to inspect financial transactions and the use of funds received by FAM. The last FAM president, Bassam Adeel Jaleel, is currently suspended over allegations of money laundering and mismanagement.
