Booking.com commissioned an extensive survey of over 24,000 travelers in 32 countries to forecast the seven upcoming travel trends in order to better understand how travel will be redesigned in 2023. Despite a complicated economic and geopolitical environment, 72 percent of people still feel the desire to travel. If 2022 was the victorious return of travel, 2023 is predicted to be the year of recreating and reviving the industry.

People are caught in a difficult tug-of-war as they try to balance what is important to them with their want to travel during a period of great upheaval when war, inflation, and urgent concerns about climate change are continuing to radically alter the world. This idea is reflected in the travel prediction for 2023, which demonstrates how drastically altering traveler needs are.

The minimal, survivalist phenomenon trends as 44 percent of travelers want to get back to basics and are looking for an off-grid holiday. 58 percent also want to use their travels in 2023 to learn survival skills. Eco-tours, wilderness survival schools and preparation for catastrophic events are expected to increase.

In 2023, 35 percent of travelers will embark on a multi-day travel experience in Virtual or Augmented Reality. They will no longer be limited by physics and will be able to experience different travel experiences within the metaverse. However 60 percent still like to be physically immersed in their travels and think that a virtual experience is not satisfying enough to cross a destination off their wish list.

Travelers will be looking for unusual vacations that astonish, amaze, and please them in 2023. This trend is expected to rise as people are looking to gain an experience outside of their comfort zone. From this 48 percent percent of people are searching for the most exotic foods available, like the spiciest chilies and 38 percent want to go on an extraterrestrial or UFO exploration tour during their vacation. In addition, 28 percent intend to purchase a single ticket in 2023 and go with their intuition and not have everything specifically planned out.

The top travel destinations on 88 percent of respondents' wish lists for 2023 are nostalgic retreats that offer the rush of reliving the good old days. As millennials become parents of young children, more places that were well-liked in the 1980s and 1990s will become popular travel destinations.

Conscious travelling will be on the rise as 44 percent of travelers worldwide in 2023 find meditation and mindfulness vacations to be popular. To focus on their mental health, transformative health, or major life events like menopause or pregnancy, 42 percent of people desire to take a health break.

2023 will see a significant increase in the leisure component of business travel. A "real life" business travel is anticipated by 44 percent of the global workforce. 59 percent of workers think travelling will increase their productivity at work. Both businesses and employees gain from this trend.

Travelers are also looking to indulge in their travels as best as they can with 50 percent saying that investing in a holiday remains a top priority for them while 68 percent continue to prioritize travel while seeking to get more value for their money and 43 percent plan to get a worthwhile travel experience.
