President has met with several foreign dignitaries on the sidelines of SIDS4 and deliberated solutions to issues faced by SIDS while exchanging views on tackling concerns such as climate change. He had also urged Commonwealth to enhance aid offered to SIDS.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged the Commonwealth to strengthen and further expand various forms of aid being offered to Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The President had met the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC on the sidelines of the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) currently ongoing in Antigua and Barbuda.
The President's Office stated that deliberations on results that are achievable by SIDS were held during the meeting while further discussing measures to increase self-sufficiency and individual resources of governments.
They also revealed that the President had urged the Commonwealth to expand the assistance offered to SIDS in compliance with the action plan agreed by the countries through the SIDS4 agenda.
"While speaking on further opportunities to enhance the role of Commonwealth in aiding SIDS, the President had urged them to extend assistance as determined under the action plan agreed by the countries through the SIDS4 agenda in Antigua and Barbuda," said the President's Office.
President Muizzu had further noted the country's increasing participation in Commonwealth and acknowledged the support offered to Maldives in empowering the sports and the youth sector, education and environment sector as well as the technology sector in the country.
During the meeting, he had also assured that his administration will continue to fortify relations between Maldives and the Commonwealth in the future as well.
President Muizzu had also met with additional foreign dignitaries on the sidelines of SIDS4, according to the President's Office.
During his meeting with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, (the host country for the SIDS4), Gaston Browne on the sidelines of SIDS4, President Muizzu had expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended for Maldives and the outstanding arrangements made by the country's government in hosting the conference.
The two leaders had deliberated issues pertaining the agenda of the conference alongside individual concerns of SIDS.
Deliberations on increasing cooperation of multilateral platforms to address concerns of priority and collaboration prospects to further fortify resilience were also held during this meeting.
The meeting between President Muizzu and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga, Siaosi 'Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni held on the sidelines of SIDS4 was mainly focused on the importance of self-sufficiency for SIDS as they navigate progress and development.
The two leaders had further deliberated improvements to the current procedures in accessibility of multilateral climate funds.
They had also ensured to tackle problems concerning climate change which is particularly prominent in SIDS and also resolved to collaborate on facilitating sustainable development in a wider scale.
During his meeting with the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth and Department of Environment of UK, Lord Richard Benyon on the sidelines of SIDS4, President Muizzu had expressed his administration's commitment to combating the climate concerns in the country and shared the steps employed in Maldives to address the climate crises.
The two leaders had deliberated on multiple issues on strengthening bilateral and multilateral collaboration, particularly on concerns relating to SIDS.
The Minister of State Lord Benyon had commended Maldives' on its active engagement is advocating for issues concerning SIDS and applauded President Muizzu on his vision for the country's development and prosperity.
