The Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes, on Tuesday, publicised the final lists of eligible applicants for the 6,720 apartments under the Hiyaa Public Housing Scheme.

The committee assured that the final lists for all categories were published in the government gazette after a thorough verification process regarding point allocation.

In addition to noting all eligible candidates and their respective points, the lists contain further details on the point allocation system and the reasons that certain applicants failed to qualify for social housing.

The committee previously publicised temporary lists for housing categories allotted for doctors and nurses (H4), teachers (H5), single parents (H6), married people between the ages of 18 to 40 (H7), residents of capital Male' (H8), long-time residents of Male' that are not registered in or own property in the capital city (H9), and persons with disabilities and their families (H10).

Despite considerable public criticism on the allocation of points, particularly regarding the 30 percent designated for living conditions, the committee maintains that pointe were granted fairly and following a physical evaluation.

Initiated during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the Hiyaa Project comprises the development of 7,000 flats, in the form of 16 towers of 25-storeys each, in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale's second phase.

Although the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) administration had issued a list of recipients, allegations of corruption and unjust distribution prompted the current government to form a committee to probe the issue and release a revised list.

Over 25,000 people were reported to have initially applied to purchase flats from the Hiyaa project.
