MNDF has said that 30,569 tonnes of water were pumped out in the dewatering operation following Male' streets becoming severely flooded following yesterday's continuous heavy rain.

Friday's rain which persisted from around 11am till 9pm caused nearly all Male' streets to be flooded, with water flowing into residences and shops. Maafannu ward was most affected by the floods.

MNDF said that they had placed pumps around Male' and begun dewatering efforts from around 11:37am yesterday. A total of 30,569 tonnes (approximately 30 million litres) of water had been pumped out by the time the efforts were brought to a halt last night.

MNDF said that in the 21 hours of the operation, approximately 24,397 litres of water had been pumped out every hour.

The floods on many streets were over two feet high. With Maafannu area's flood rising, a waterway was cut into the pavement around Rasfannu, allowing the water to flow out.

MET Office said that the highest amount of rainfall in Male' was recorded between 5pm and 6pm, at 60mm.

With flood and rain damage to houses, NDMA has provided temporary shelter to 226 persons from 36 residences.

MET Office predicts that the weather will improve over the next 48 hours.
