Applications for 720 student loan slots opened on Wednesday, providing opportunities for higher education both in the Maldives and abroad.

This year's student loan scheme has additional slots available in sectors that have been highly sought after in previous years.

At a press conference at the Ministry of Higher Education, Minister Dr. Ibrahim Hassan announced that slots for piloting and doctoral studies have been increased in this year's loan scheme.

While only 10 opportunities were opened for pilot training courses last year, this year's loan scheme offers 60 slots in this field.

Last year, 25 opportunities were opened for MBBS and 10 for medicine. However, this year the minister announced that 55 opportunities have been opened for an MBBS degree, and 20 slots have been opened for pursuing a Masters in postgraduate medicine abroad.

The loan scheme also provides opportunities for students with disabilities to study at the diploma level in the Maldives and abroad.

All students studying for their first degree at the expense of the Government of Maldives will be given the opportunity to submit applications in their field of study. They will also be able to recover other expenses not covered under the first degree scheme from their tuition fees.

In addition, top-up loans will be available for students unable to complete the program due to reasons beyond their control.

Applications for student loans will remain open until March 15, 2023.
