Parliament Secretariat has announced the decision to extended the legislative body's third term of the year once again.

Before commencing the sitting on Wednesday, December 6, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam announced the secretariat's decision to extend the current term until December 18.

Aslam said that the decision reflects several key works still remaining in pending, including the 2024 state budget bill.

"As such, voting would be called out on the matter during today's sitting," Aslam said.

Earlier, the term was extended until December 7.

A major portion of the current term experienced a deadlock, which arose following the no-confidence motions submitted by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) against the then Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

Following this, both Nasheed and Eva recused themselves from chairing the parliament sittings.

The decision also led to a protest inside the parliament chambers, which stalled other important matters, including the formulation of the standing committees.

However, Aslam, who was elected to replace Nasheed following his resignation, expedited the efforts of the parliament.
