India replaces Russia as top tourist market to the Maldives

The Indian tourist market has once again become the top source market to the Maldives, replacing Russia.

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, as of June 4, the total number of Indian tourists arriving in the Maldives on an annual basis was recorded at 96,442. Following closely behind, Russia accounted for 96,352 arrivals to the Maldives thus far.

The total tourist arrivals to the Maldives has reached 825,238 as of June 4 which is 174,000 short of hitting the one millionth arrival mark. From the total tourist arrivals, India and Russia held 22 percent of the market share.

The annual tourist arrivals as of June 4 also observed a 15 percent increment compared to the corresponding period in 2022, during which arrivals stood at 717,562.

While tourist arrivals observed an increase during the first four months in 2023, arrivals in May observed a 3.6 percent drop compared to the same month last year. In May 2023, the total tourist arrivals stood at 120,960 whereas in the same month last year, arrivals stood at 125,528.

As of June 4, the daily average arrival of tourists is at 5,502 in annual terms while the average duration of stay in annual terms is 7.8 days.

The Maldivian tourism industry currently has a combined total of 60,818 beds. The industry currently consists of 170 operational resorts with a combined total of 41,263 beds, 13 hotels with 1,640 beds, 901 guesthouses with 14,790 beds and 160 safari vessels with 3,125 beds.

Earlier, the Maldives government announced an annual arrival target of 1.8 million tourists, which according to the Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom was likely to observe a 10 percent increase once the Chinese tourist market resumed.
