Man sentenced to a life sentence in jail over murdering an expatriate worker while he was asleep appeals his case in the High Court.
Ali Hamza had killed a Bangladeshi man while he was asleep in Laamu atoll Gan, in 2015. He was sentenced to life in jail, as well as to repay MVR 1.3 million in blood money.
Blood money is money paid to the family of the victim in compensation.
High Court has accepted the case submitted to them on his behalf.
The state had pressed charges that for intentional homicide against Hamza. However Criminal Court had ruled for manslaughter, as it was not clear that he had intended to kill when he attacked the foreigner.
When Hamza received his life sentence, he had used foul language in court, which earned him an additional 15 days to his sentence for contempt of court.
