Police rearrest juvenile suspect in Nadeem’s murder

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, rearrested the juvenile suspect in the murder of Nadheem Abdul Raheem.

Nadeem Abdul Raheem, 24, was attacked by a gang inside the Terminal Cafe’ in capital Male on July 27, 2017, and was receiving emergency treatment for stab wounds to his head when he passed away two days later.

Although the rearrested suspect was a minor at the time of the murder, he is currently 18 years old and under police custody at Himmafushi Jail, according to Maldives Correctional Service.

After his initial arrest, Juvenile Court dropped the charges against the child and released him in November 2018, stating that the Prosecutor General’s Office had sought charges after the duration granted for it under the Act on Prohibiting ‎Threatening and Possession of Dangerous Weapons and Sharp ‎Objects.

The Prosecutor General then appealed the Juvenile Court’s decision at High Court, seeking the rearrest of the released suspect.

In addition to the juvenile, four more suspects were charged with Nadeem’s murder, including Mohamed Mafaaz, Ali Nifaz, Hussain Shamin and Mohamed Karam Suhail.

Mohamed Mafaaz, a man listed in the police’s list of Dangerous Criminals with a long record of dangerous attacks, was charged with homicide using a sharp object, while the remaining three were charged for taking part in the homicide.

Police revealed that Nadeem was murdered in retaliation during a series of assaults that took place in Male’ City.
