Ramadan discounts from electricity bills were allocated to offer maximum ease: STELCO

STELCO MD, Fahmy has stated that utility bills of Ramadan were given discounts to offer the most ease which included a large portion of Ramadan while Fenaka MD, Muaz stated that a discount higher than average was given to include the remaining days of Ramadan.

Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), Hussain Fahmy has said that the discounts from water and electricity bills during the month of Ramadan were allocated in a way that offered maximum ease to the people.

While the utility bills of Ramadan were divided into two, some has expressed concerns on not receiving a discount for this month's bill.

During the press conference held at the President's Office today, Fahmy stated that collecting readings on the beginning and end of Ramadan from all areas of Male' is not an easy feat due to the current procedure for billing.

He further remarked that altering the billing duration is also a challenging procedure and that the alleviations from utility bills were extended to include a large portion of Ramadan.

"Discount were given in a manner that will offer the most ease to the people. That is because it was given in review of the highest and best peak period," said Fahmy.

He said that while some bills had observed slight inconsistencies, arrangements to resolve this are made in the following month's bill.

Fahmy said that STELCO had extended a total discount of MVR 200 million last Ramadan, inclusive of utility bills.

Speaking at the press conference, Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed stated that the discounted bill extended on Ramadan was half of that month due to the company's general billing period of 25th to 24th of the next month.

Asserting that the remaining days of Ramadan were also incorporated into the discount, and that the amount which exceeded the average was calculated into the discount.

He further remarked that households would be offered a 10 percent discount on bills which did not exceed the average usage compared to normal months and that this discount would also be applied to households which did not receive a discount from the first bill.

Muaz shared that Fenaka Corporation had given a total of MVR 25 million as discounts last Ramadan.
